I rarely can resist an obviously kickass video game. However I had managed to do so through 2 incarnations of Guitar Hero. However the third one just recently came out, featuring a wireless guitar. As a huge gadget dork, I convinced myself that “Hey, it’s wireless now! That is reason enough to start playing!”. So I did.
As a long time guitar player, I was worried. You see a lot of undisciplined guitarists (like myself) have learned to play guitar well, while using their pinky finger very sparingly. You can get by. In Guitar Hero you can’t. Thus inspiring my initial thought of “Guitar Hero is harder than real guitar”. Either I was going to fail miserably, or who knows, maybe Guitar Hero could improve my actual guitar playing abilities, forcing that stupid useless pinky finger to do something for once.
I hammered through medium mode on my moderate learning curve upwards. Started blasting through hard mode within the week. The difficulty goes up pretty decently for a first time player, really well actually. It was definitely getting harder and pushing my mad percussive rhythmic button pressing skills, but it didn’t get frustrating…. until I ran into one of my favorite songs of recent years, by one of my favorite bands, Muse’s Knights of Cydonia. It seemed pretty much unpossible. I sent out a sincere thank you to Guitar Hero, for making me hate Muse. Dicks.
Perseverance. Strength. Honor. Integrity. Diligence. Dedication. Care. Truth. Over the course of two hours, I summoned all of the above to finally get past this monster of a song. I breathed a sigh, and then had a strange feeling. That wasn’t a sigh of relief. That wasn’t even a feeling of accomplishment. That was a straight up sigh of disappointment as in “I wish I had spent all this time practicing real guitar”. It was one of the least satisfying major accomplishments of my life.

Having said all that, I’m still plucking away through Guitar Hero, and of course, I haven’t picked up my real guitar since the day it came out.
Oh, and then I found 20 bucks.
